New Netflix iOS app capitulates to bandwidth caps (Kevin Fitchard/GigaOM)

New Netflix iOS app capitulates to bandwidth caps (Kevin Fitchard/GigaOM)

Carriers like Verizon and AT&T are trying to convince Netflix to pay for the bandwidth its subscribers consume on their networks. Today Netflix delivered a rather oblique response. It’s giving its iPhone customers the option of turning off cellular access to Netflix completely and instead rely on old-fashioned Wi-Fi to deliver their movies and TV shows.

With more and more customers moving off carriers’ old unlimited data plans to tiered data buckets, streaming any reasonable quantity of video is all but impossible without incurring major overage charges. In its latest update to its iPhone and iPad apps, though, customers can toggle on and off 3G/4G connectivity. It may mean sacrificing Netflix access everywhere, but it could help them avoid rather unpleasant phone bills at the end of the month.

There are still a few unlimited options out there for iPhone users. You can stream to your heart’s content on Sprint’s 3G network. There are still millions of customers grandfathered into Verizon and AT&Ts’ old unlimited plans, but both operators have begun throttling back speeds once customers hit unspecified â€" and seemingly arbitrary â€" thresholds, making video streaming all but useless.

What’s more, Verizon is doing everything it can to coax, cajole and boot customers off their unlimited plans this summer. Unless the carriers firm up some kind of revenue sharing pact with Netflix â€" which Verizon may well be in the process of cementing â€" it looks like streaming movies is going to be primarily a Wi-Fi affair.

Advertisements in Books Latest Thing to “Save Publishing”

Advertisements in Books Latest Thing to “Save Publishing”

I hope the Department of Justice is happy — now that ebook monopolists like Amazon can charge whatever the hell they want, the price of books, like all other content, is rapidly approaching zero. The latest broken-down show pony to enter this race to the bottom is BookBoon, which publishes free ebooks that are supported through advertising.

Paging through their “business” titles, I randomly downloaded the book Motivation Skills, expecting hilarity to ensue. And it did not disappoint! The opening line of this book is:

One of the most commonly debated and researched fields in the business world is motivation.

TELL ME MORE.

Why do people do what they do and how can we motivate others to do what we need them to do in the business place?

The ‘business place,’ is where motivation happens! Wait what do they mean. The place of business? The business? I don’t know what language these books are translated from, but I’m starting to get the same sinking feeling I experienced the first time I hit the homepage of the Huffington Post.

From BookBoon’s press release:

While traditional book publishers are still struggling to find a viable business model for eBooks, Bookboon.com is taking a different approach. With their free eBooks they offer an alternative for the often unfair priced eBooks.

It’s true, the price of the average eBook is outrageous. The last time I paid the about the same for an eBook as I do for my lunch, when the former required years of effort but the latter is delicious, I just about spit nails.

Now that books = content, I look forward to a decline in the already abysmal wages of most authors, lots of talk about the “long tail,” and a missive from Seth Godin about how if only I knew how to market myself, none of this would have happened in the first place.

Amazing Video Shows Milky Way and Andromedia Galaxies Colliding

Amazing Video Shows Milky Way and Andromedia Galaxies Colliding

The Andromedia Galaxy – located 2.5 million light years away, but heading toward us at 250,000 miles per hour – is on a collision course with the Milky Way. However, will any heavenly bodies be destroyed when the event occurs? Continue reading to find out.

The two galaxies have enough space between them that any direct collision of heavenly bodies is unlikely. But the Sun won’t be getting off so easy; it’ll probably be flung into another part of the galaxy.

The Rumored iPhone 5′s Four Inch Front Panel Can Nearly Swallow An Old iPhone Whole (John Biggs/TechCrunch)

The Rumored iPhone 5′s Four Inch Front Panel Can Nearly Swallow An Old iPhone Whole (John Biggs/TechCrunch)

Another day, another iPhone 5 leak. This time we’re looking at a four-inch long front panel of what appears to be a new iPhone. This panel suggests a longer, 16:9 style body and screen and lines up with previous news of a longer iPhone casing with a Micro USB port on the bottom.

I’m very skeptical in regards to these videos simply because rapid prototyping and sourcing is getting so simple these days anyone can carve out a convincing iPhone shell and take some good footage of it. Am I skeptical enough to dismiss this outright, however? No.

Japanese bloggers at Macotakara acquired the piece and compared it to the current iPhone. The clear portion is almost as big as the entire screen of the old iPhone, making this a fairly radical redesign. It’s not as slab-like as other phones out there but it gives you a bit more screen for media consumption.

Will we really see this at WWDC this year? Who knows. It’s always nice to dream.
